See the Triumph Survivor Advocacy Training Program Materials
We developed this Survivor Advocacy Training Program to provide a step-by-step process for survivors to harness their collective power to engage in advocacy efforts. We believe that both smaller-scale and larger-scale advocacy efforts are extremely important for changing the social systems that continue to stigmatize survivors of abuse. In our efforts to promote advocacy to end intimate partner violence and the stigma surrounding it, we are guided by the following four assumptions:
- Advocacy means taking action to promote positive change within social systems.
- Everyone can be an advocate for ending intimate partner violence and supporting survivors.
- Advocacy efforts can be big and/or small.
- Survivors themselves have a unique and powerful role to play as advocates.
Our goals the See the Triumph Survivor Advocacy Training program are as follows. First, we want to provide participants with a framework for understanding what advocacy means, and what it means to advocate for social change. Second, we want to support survivors in identifying their unique talents, skills, and interests that they can contribute to advocacy efforts related to intimate partner violence. And third, we aim to equip participants with new skills and resources that will allow them to effectively engage in advocacy efforts in their own communities.
This Facilitator Guide contains two main parts. In Part One, we suggest guidelines for people who are interested in facilitating this Survivor Advocacy Training Program in their own communities. This section includes characteristics of facilitators and suggestions for planning and carrying out a successful training program. In Part Two, we provide the curriculum for the 8-week Survivor Advocacy Training Program. As you will see in this curriculum, this program is very interactive and skills-based. It is also designed to be tailored to the unique needs and interests of the members of the group.
